Rumours previously gathered major pace that Harrison Ford had been cast in a major role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
With the likes of Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans retiring from their roles in the MCU, the studio is constantly on the lookout for A-listers who can join the franchise to inject some more star power into a certain project.
In this case, that certain project is the upcoming Thunderbolts movie, and the character Ford was rumoured to be playing is General Ross, previously played in the MCU by William Hurt.
Industry insider Jeff Sneider said on his Hot Mic podcast:
"Marvel has denied what I'm about to tell you and that's a matter of timing. Am I too early or am I too late? So the deal is multiple sources have indicated that Harrison Ford either is or was the studio's top choice to star in the Thunderbolts movie as General Ross himself because William Hurt passed away."
Hurt sadly passed away in March of 2022 after portraying Ross in a handful of MCU projects including The Incredible Hulk and Captain America: Civil War.
In the comic books, General Ross actually becomes the Red-Hulk, so it is possible that Ford could come on board as a major villain in The Thunderbolts.
The Thunderbolts cast includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
Now, SlashFilm has confirmed the casting.
Why has Ford not been announced as General Ross?
According to Sneider, Ford was initially meant to be announced as joining the MCU at Disney's D23 conference.
However, Lucasfilm and Indiana Jones producer Kathleen Kennedy strongly opposed the idea, as she wanted the focus to be on Ford's promotion of Indiana Jones 5.
Ford has a positive relationship with Disney, having appeared in Indiana Jones and Star Wars, so it isn't out of the question that he could join the MCU.
