Thanks to her roles in projects like Friends and the Scream franchise, Courtney Cox is one of the most famous names in Hollywood.
Particularly through Friends, which became the biggest show on television during its 10-season run, Cox hit superstardom, reaching millions of TV sets around the globe. By the final season, each of the main six cast members was making $1 million per episode.
Her role in Friends allowed her to pursue other projects, as she also famously plays Gale Weathers in the Scream movies, while she has also appeared in such films as Ace Ventura: When Natura Calls, 3000 Miles to Graceland and The Longest Yard.
It could have been very different for her though if she listened to her father's advice to quit acting just before a career break on Family Ties.
"My dad thought I should give up, really," she said on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
"What happened was, I hadn't worked in a long time. And I only had enough money to live about two weeks. I mean, really eat, like that was it. So, I was talking to my dad and he was like, 'CC - that's my nickname - you need to come home.
"It's a long fall from Los Angeles to Birmingham (Alabama, hometown) and this is time to pack it in. And you are a salesman, you're a damned good salesman. You need to do what you do best.'"
What would Cox have done?
Cox says she would have sold swimming pools as that was her father's business at the time.
"What did he want you to sell?" Kimmel asked, to which she responded:
"Swimming pools.
"That's my dad's business. By the way, I am pretty good at that. I knew I had that as a fallback. The next day I got a call saying the audition I'd gone on for Family Ties, I got the part as Michael J. Fox's girlfriend for the last two years."
Cox most recently appeared in Scream VI in which she reprises her role as Gale Weathers.
