Daredevil star Charlie Cox doesn't think Disney's version of the show will be as gory as the one we saw on Netflix.
From 2015 to 2018, Cox played Matt Murdock / Daredevil, a blind lawyer by day who fights criminals as a masked vigilante by night. Even though the series proved popular with fans, it was cancelled by Netflix after series three due to Disney acquiring the sole streaming rights to Marvel properties.
Following the cancellation, the term #SaveDaredevil began trending on social media.
It was believed that Daredevil, the show, was dead, but in March of 2022, an official reboot was announced titled Daredevil: Born Again.
Some fans have expressed concern that Disney's version of the character may lose the dark tone, especially after Cox's comedic cameo in She-Hulk. The actor does believe that the show will continue to be for mature audiences, but perhaps with the violence toned down.
"This has to be a reincarnation, it has to be different, otherwise why are we doing it?” he told NME.
"My opinion is this character works best when he’s geared towards a slightly more mature audience. My instinct is that on Disney+ it will be dark but it probably won’t be as gory.
"Let’s take the things that really worked, but can we broaden? Can we appeal to a slightly younger audience without losing what we’ve learned about what works?"
Cox confirmed that filming will commence on the 18-part series in 2023, with a release set for 2024.
Save Daredevil
When asked by Marvel.com about the #SaveDaredevil campaign, Cox said he owes his career to the fans who fought for the show to return.
"There's so much I want to say," he beamed.
"Whatever happens to my career going forward from this point on, I owe most of it to the “Save Daredevil” campaign. That even when I had lost hope years ago, they did not, and they continued to campaign and support. And over the years, I've met many of them, and they're such an enthusiastic, passionate crowd.
"Daredevil is such an amazing character. It's been the great honor of my career to be offered that part and to be able to play him. I've had such fun with it. It's changed my life irrevocably. And when the show came to an end, despite the disappointment of the journey ending, I felt like we'd done a good job, and we had an amazing time and we could only be grateful for what we'd had."
