The Naked Gun creator David Zucker says he will not watch the reboot in the cinema.
The original Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!, released in 1988, is considered one of the greatest comedy movies of all time and undoubtedly one of the most influential spoof movies in history.
It spawned two sequels, The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear, and The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult.
The series starred the late, great Leslie Nielsen as Lieutenant Frank Drebin, Priscilla Presley, George Kennedy and, er O.J. Simpson.
Die-hard Naked Gun fans were adamant that it should never be remade, but Family Guy's Seth MacFarlane has bravely taken it upon himself to write and produce a remake which stars Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson.
David Zucker reacts to Naked Gun reboot
It has received positive reviews from critics and earned a positive opening weekend at the box office, but Zucker, who wrote the first three movies and directed the first two, says he would have gone in a different direction with the new movie.
“I’m excited about it because it just shows that there’s a strong market for comedy in movie theaters, and spoof in particular," he told The Hollywood Reporter.
“People are liking it, which is great. I really like the director , and I just couldn’t wish him more well.
“I texted him already, saying, ‘I hear the reviews are great, and it’s tracking well.’ He was very happy to hear from me, and we’ll probably get together later in the month when the smoke clears.
“I’m not gonna see it, but I don’t see any of the sequels that were of my material done by other people, and that’s fine. I’ve told Akiva that I have no intention to see it.
“He actually invited me to come see an early cut of it, but I told him there’s nothing I could do to help because it really isn’t what I would have done.
“That’s not to say that he didn’t actually end up doing a good movie. But I don’t think I could help with that.”
