The production and scrapped release of Batgirl will go down as one of the most infamous failed movies of all time.
Amid corporate changes and cost-cutting at Warner Bros, the studio made the unprecedented decision to entirely cancel Batgirl even though $90 million had already been spent on the movie.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav later explained that the studio ultimately did not "believe" the movie would succeed after seeing an initial cut.
The whole situation left directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah devastated.
"It's the biggest disappointment of our careers," El Arbi told Insider. "There's still a feeling of unfinished business," Fallah added.
"We didn't get the chance to show Batgirl to the world and let the audience judge for themselves," El Arbi continued.
"Because the audience really is our ultimate boss and should be the deciders of if something is good or bad, or if something should be seen or not."
The pair did admit that their love for DC and the Batman universe is so high that they would work for the studio again despite being screwed over.
"Our love for DC, Batman, Batgirl, Gotham City, it's so big that, as fans, we could never say no to another project," Adil explained. "If we got another chance to be part of it, we'd do it. We didn't get our day in court. We still want to make our case."
Leslie Grace would return as Batgirl
The star of Batgirl, Leslie Grace, admits she would return as the character if the opportunity arose.
"I mean, why not? Why not? Who knows what the future holds?" she said in a conversation with Yahoo.
"I have moved forward. I'm working on a lot of exciting things that feel really aligned with the path that I'm looking forward to just enjoying and building. And I'm very grateful to have had the experience of Batgirl and have met the people that I've met from that experience, and to have received the support that I, in some cases, didn't even know was there after the news of it not coming out."
Batgirl would have seen Michael Keaton's return as Bruce Wayne (which happened in The Flash) as well as Brendan Fraser playing Firefly.
