Adam Driver has revealed that Kylo Ren's redemption arc was not part of the initial plan for his character in Star Wars.
In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Ren is presented as the major villain of the sequel trilogy. His status as a villain is solidified when he murders his father, Han Solo, at the conclusion of the first movie.
However, by the end of the third, The Rise of Skywalker, the character finds redemption after helping Rey in her battle against Emperor Palpatine. Some fans were unhappy that Kylo Ren went down that road.
The original plan was for Kylo Ren to be evil throughout the three movies.
"I had an overall arc in mind that he (director J.J Abrams) wanted to do, which then changed," Driver told the Rich Eisen Show.
"His idea was almost the opposite journey of Vader, where Vader starts the most confident, the most committed to the Dark Side, and by the last movie he's the most vulnerable, and weak, and he wanted to start at the opposite, where this character was the most confused and vulnerable, and by the end of the three movies would be most committed to the Dark Side."
Driver still gets Han Solo shouts
In a recent interview with CNN, Driver revealed that, to this day, fans still shout at him for killing Han Solo.
"Somebody reminds me about that every day," the actor joked.
“Not every day, but yeah. It used to be more, but now it’s probably once a month someone will let me know that I killed Han Solo.”
