Farewell to the King plot
"In the midst of war, one man vanished into the jungle, and emerged as king."
Two English soldiers are dropped over Borneo to try to win the natives over to the Allied cause. Immediately after landing, they are taken by cannibals to their chieftain. To their surprise, this is a white person.

Good film in which a deserting American soldier becomes the king of a people on Borneo. A war film that is presented quite adventurously, especially during the first half. A fascinating main character that could have used a little more. Plenty of action, beautiful sets and beautiful images of the jungle.

Adventure/war film about two British soldiers who discover a primitive tribe in the jungle of Borneo led by a white man. Based on an anti-war novel by Pierre Schoendoerffer. It seems a bit like a modern version of Heart of Darkness and the fact that violence and war follows people into the most untouched places does not really feel like a refreshing starting point. That's why I didn't always find the film very interesting. Nick Nolte as the noisy Learoyd comes across as unbelievable and, in my opinion, can be called a miscast. Nigel Havers (from Chariots of Fire) is also one of the most colorless actors I know. It is a decent mid-range film, beautifully or even beautifully depicted, but I am still missing something here.
