16-year-old Zoey Stevens, an experienced dancer and top student, is having a hard time. She must adjust to a new school, a new and clumsy dance crew, a new stepfather, 3 new rowdy stepbrothers and an unruly dog. But everything changes when an app on her smartphone seems to take control of all the guys around her.

Zapped's biggest selling point is Zendaya's energetic and infectious playing. Nice girl who carries the film effortlessly. Unfortunately, the material with which she has to make do is very thin. Humor of a questionable level, predictable high school clichés, mediocre fellow actors and a somewhat strangely imaginative story. It all starts out pretty normal, but once that whole "phone app lets me get guys to do what I want" thing starts, it gets a lot less. Fortunately, Zendaya manages to save things a bit.

These are the movies for which I really have to be in the right mood, but I'm in that mood regularly and then these kinds of movies are easy to swallow. Zapped mainly rests on a fun concept, but if you are familiar with Disney then you also know that there is always a certain meaning behind it.
To be honest, I've never understood the hype surrounding Zendaya, and this movie makes no difference. Many traits, many indignant faces, but absolutely no reason to praise her as an actress. In Zapped she stays very within the books and is played out by a few more experienced roles. Not crazy, but also a bit of a shame.
The concept is nice, controlling a certain aspect of your environment with your phone, but that's where it ends. Many funny or genius things are not done with it. A smile here and there, but in the end it just makes the film smoother and not exactly better. Too bad, but to be expected from a Disney movie.
The pace is fairly high, so the (too) long running time is still manageable, but as expected it stays within the lines and ticks off almost every cliché that these types of films carry with them. Children will probably find this a little more difficult, but adults may have less fun with this film.
Decent acting from some of the characters, but I didn't find Zendaya that special as usual. It all looks nice and has a nice concept, but the effect is, as you can expect, safely within the lines. Maybe nice if you have nothing to do, but otherwise you can just skip this movie.

Nice teen comedy for girls in particular. The story is simple and predictable but quite enjoyable. The movie looks good. The build up is good and the film keeps up the momentum. Comedy is interspersed with light drama. The acting is also ok and the chemistry between the various protagonists is fine. Purely for teenagers, but it is also doable for adults. 3.0
