Film that follows the path of The Descent, but takes The Librarian with it along the way. The film is more than what happens to be stuck in a cave, ruin or like here catacombs. Apparently the film was actually shot in the Paris catacombs, so that immediately gives us a nice view of the underground there. Due to the mysterious story and the quest, we get more than just being stuck, some threat and maybe also gone. A varied team and as stated in the genre manual, you already know that some members will be gone.

I do like this genre. Just enough light to be able to see something, which gives you a lot of suggestion. And especially the claustrophobic feeling. The threat is always around the corner. The handheld camera works well here too. A way of filming that works if you do it right. Think Rec, Cloverfield, The Descent, Trollhunter and Monster. It's no coincidence that director John Erick Dowdle made the remake of Rec: Quarantine. Experience teaches art, As above so below has become a better film.

First time seeing Perdita Weeks at work, and it's certainly not bad. Hopefully we get to see her at work again. Furthermore, you still see good ideas, some things you immediately see between the lines, but by the time you realize it you are a bit faded. It could certainly be better, but the film turned out better than I expected.

I like the whole story about alchemy, as above so below is also one of the Hermetic axioms in the Kybalion. Good starting point for a film and I think it's really good in itself. The only thing that always annoys me is that they go underwater several times, but never walk around wet. Really that drowsy?

Usually these handheld cam movies start out nice and then gradually get bogged down in an avalanche of clichés. This one "on the surface" is no exception. Were it not for the fact that Dowdle comes up with an intriguing yet far-fetched premise. I felt that some prior knowledge of Dante's interpretation of hell was necessary to get the hang of it, because it's a fairly complicated movie after all. I admit that I did watch a Youtube video "movie explained" to better understand the details and the layering. In retrospect, I don't think one viewing is enough to get the picture.
For example, the characters are all confronted with sins from their past (eg Scarlett and her father who committed suicide) and their calvary through "hell" is an ordeal to purify their souls of these sins (in the purgatory or purgatory). And in the end they get pooped back on earth . It is original, but a pity that I only had to see it afterwards, and also a pity that such an original idea is packaged in such a clichéd way. Claustrophobic and exciting, the film knows how to be, but there are better found footage films.
