When Hwe-yeon is forced by Prince Sung-won to become the king's new wife, she runs away with her beloved Kwon-yoo. The prince finds the couple in a barn and takes Hwe-yeon back to the palace, while Kwon-yoo is physically punished. When the king dies suddenly under suspicious circumstances, his brother Sung-won becomes his successor, but the real power falls into the hands of his ruthless mother. He wants to deal with Queen Hwe-yeon and her family once and for all. This is met with resistance from the new king, who is in love with his sister-in-law.
