Liv Ullman’s eyes. For me, her gaze is at the heart of Scenes from a Marriage.

It took me a while to get into it. The continuous dialogue (sometimes they are more like monologues) in small spaces, almost without other characters, slowly sucks you into the film. Or not so much into the film but into the lives of two people. It is unbelievable what depth Bergman manages to put into his work. He circles around the couple and mercilessly records all their weak spots, he analyses their feelings and thoughts with almost surgical precision. The contradictory nature of the marriage of these two people is beautifully exposed: their inability to love each other that is paradoxically combined with the inability to let each other go. While their marriage shows a downward trend, their relationship grows in direct proportion. The end of the film is therefore a world of difference from the beginning, but still nothing has changed.

No director approaches the content of literature as closely as Bergman. But he also makes full use of the possibilities of the film medium. Here mainly with the close-ups of two faces, characteristic of his work, in all possible variations. And of course with the eyes of Liv Ullman. 4*

Some "top" films are really a mystery to me. I find this film really dated. It is also hardly a feature film, more of a static play, with a few close-ups with far too much text. In fact, it is 163 minutes of reading subtitles if you do not speak Swedish, and then it is almost non-stop drivel. Hardly interesting.

In my opinion, there is no perfect marriage at all in the beginning. I see 2 sheep who are married, one sheep comes out of its sheepskin after 1 hour and finally gets angry and has a fling, completely predictable. I didn't think what a jerk the wallpaper hanger is, but hey hey finally one of them steps out of his sheep role. I found that woman especially annoying, persistently playing the sheep. Get angry for once! Before she takes off her sheep's clothing, we have 2 hours of it. Then she finally gets angry, and we actually get an interesting scene. Then we are suddenly 10 years further and they look back on themselves with some mildness as purified real people.

Maybe this was a relevant film in 1974, at the beginning of the great separation era, in that sense it is also worth watching. They were pioneers so then it often goes a bit more difficult. But now it is too slow, too predictable and outdated.

Intense, overwhelming and recognizable. Beautiful piece of acting and camera work.

And in my all time top:
