Starry Eyes plot

"She would kill to be famous."

Sarah Walker (Alex Essoe), a determined and desperate actress, would give anything to land a part in a major movie. Unfortunately, she falls prey to a satanic cult that has been active in Hollywood since the Golden Age. They have the power to make her a star, but it comes at a terrible price.

Starry eyes

Quite slow to start but once it gets going it's definitely worth it. Story is fun and you are quickly tempted to come up with a solution for the character. But back to the movie. The make-up is nicely done and the acting certainly stands out as one of the best. Hope we hear more from these directors in the future.

It takes an hour. Only then will both directors have finished setting up their leading roles and have laid their foundation. Something about ambitions and dreams, it's literally drummed up, so it's like that. Not a smooth running hour. Sarah is not the most interesting character, her vulnerability is even a bit annoying and she is not really helped by the rest. What takes place around the restaurant is close to a naughty comedy, the group of friends feels like a whiny indie drama and when it comes to the casting, it seems like someone has taken a pill. That's why I didn't think the transition to harnessing was very successful and although there was quite a bit of filth, the jeu was somewhat reduced. It has something to it, but all in all it's a bit too shaky for me to make any sense. Nice soundtrack, that's for sure.

Intriguing feature film debut by director duo Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer, who can especially benefit from Alex Essoe, whose acting level seems to grow along with the progress of the film. Nevertheless, it is clearly an indie film, so not every visual idea comes off the screen equally well. However, that is quickly forgotten once the pace is increased in the last half hour, where Essoe's character (until the last 10 ridiculous minutes) turns out to be very impressive. The pity is that Kölsch and Widmyer allow themselves to be seduced by an unsurprising context to explain things, because the structure is extremely unpredictable and interesting. The practical effects look impressive, making the brutal murders towards the finale extra vicious and graphic. The first hour is perhaps a bit too drawn out and it takes a while for Essoe's character to get going, but eventually Starry Eyes turns to a moving pace and impressive horror images. This is an extremely successful film, especially for a debut.
