Not terribly exciting or scary, but a decent story nonetheless, which can be a bit oppressive for those who don't often watch these kinds of films. For me, it's one of a dozen; they're released constantly, and camcorder filming doesn't really appeal to me. Still, the four of us gave it an average of 6.5, rounding out to a 7. The set is appealing: a beautiful old English church with a desolate setting, a pub as it should be, and the acting, along with the story, wasn't bad either.

Hence the average 7-.

Father Crellick (Luke Neal) has requested the Vatican investigate whether the remote 12th-century church where he preaches was the site of a religious event. Three investigators travel there, and with the help of several fixed cameras and headsets, they attempt to substantiate this claim. Goldner portrays the characters and their relationships well, but what happens inside the church isn't exactly something to write home about, let alone something that will send shivers down your spine.

The film isn't being well-received here, and I can understand why. It's quite slow, and one man's slow burner is another man's deadly dull mess. I don't find the handcam footage particularly annoying, and it fits the story well, but it might be a factor for some.

Anyway, we're in England, where something's not right at an old church that stands on an older pagan site; the priest thinks he's witnessed miracles, and the Vatican sends a group of investigators. And slowly, more and more unexpected things happen, and elements are discovered that suggest a pagan, pre-Christian presence is still active and influencing the location, whether consciously or unconsciously. It moves slowly, and only in the last twenty minutes or so do we descend into "the belly of the beast," quite literally, exploring deep tunnels beneath the church. Slow, sure, and the budget for special effects is also rather limited, but in terms of atmosphere, this film was right up my alley. The acting is excellent, too, and I quite enjoyed the film, and ditto the denouement. For fans of slow folk horror, I recommend it, but I see a lot of people whose taste in horror I certainly respect are awarding it 1 or 2 stars, so, in plain English: proceed with caution and your mileage may vary.
