When Bill Scanlin loses his job, he is unable to tell his wife Susan. Afraid of losing his family, he begins a life of crime. He befriends Detective Frank, who has chosen to enforce the law all his life but attaches little value to it. The kind Ruby inspires Bill to commit his first crime and soon he begins to enjoy the power.
