What a lot of messy nonsense we get to see here, but Hooper manages to make it so over-the-top that the film is saved from a failing grade. Dourif makes a big contribution to that and of course the wonderfully exaggerated effects.

Meh.

I can live with the fact that the story of a horror film like this isn't all that great, but Hooper really makes a mess of it. The problem is mainly that you see him trying to make something of the story, but it really doesn't seem to make sense. I had that problem with Lifeforce too. Too much hay.

The flamethrowers that are supposed to serve as human combustion are still funny (a bit of a Tetsuo feeling, but worse), but otherwise the effects are not that great, and Hooper's direction is also not strong enough to make something nice with these kinds of effects.

Dourif is also a small bright spot, although he can't really carry the film either. He occasionally drowns himself in the plot and the rest of the cast is simply too weak to bring any level to the film. That makes this film with its 96 minutes ultimately still too long, could have been 15 minutes shorter.

Hooper continues to miss a lot with the occasional (half)successful film. This one is unfortunately not. Only recommended for Dourif and the human flamethrowers, otherwise worthless pulp.

A mess indeed. However, there is something to be done with the subject of spontaneous combustion. I would have preferred to see this in the hands of Cronenberg, who at least proved that he can handle body horror. The film has a few moments, but it ends astonishingly badly. I think Hooper himself did not know how to finish it. We must not forget that this is the director of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist. I thought the effects sometimes worked, sometimes hopelessly outdated. Fortunately, Dourif is the perfect man for a role like this, that was at least something.
