Ilo Ilo plot
The story is set during the Asian financial crisis of 1997. An average family from Singapore struggles with increasing economic and domestic pressures. Teck has lost his job in the sales business, but he can't bring himself to tell his family. Hwee Leng, his wife, is pregnant. However, she still works full-time as a secretary. Ten-year-old Jiale, the couple's only child, seems to be responding to rising tensions at school, at home and in the streets, prompting his parents to hire Terry, a Filipino nanny, to care for him.
