“The purpose of architecture is to create timeless, free, happy spaces for all activities in life,” says architect John Lautner. It is a documentary about his lifelong quest to create an architecture 'that has no beginning and no end'. Director Murray Grigor explores the dramatic spaces that Lautner created. John Lautner himself provides the perceptive commentary, drawn from old audio interviews. Others are also speaking. Frank Gehry tells how he, like many colleagues, was deeply influenced by John Lautner's work. Original clients and current owners share the strong ties they have with Lautner's homes. Frank Escher, who renovated Lautner's famous Chemosphere house, talks about his experiences, as does Julius Shulman, a noted photographer of modernist architecture. The documentary features original drawings and historical photographs from the John Lautner Archive (Getty Museum, Los Angeles) alongside spectacular film footage of Lautner's most important buildings, bringing his quest for timeless architecture to life.
