“I know you all want answers, and believe me, so do I.”

Mediocre. I always like Nicolas Cage in these B-movies, and here he is by far the best element. Left Behind has a nice premise, but the execution is really bad. The beginning alone is very messy. The acting is abominable and the characters are especially annoying. I understand the religious aspect, but that doesn't mean it makes me happy.

Funny how opinions can differ so much. I really liked this movie a lot. A beautiful story and a beautiful ending. It makes you think when you're dealing with faith.

I already felt wet when the pre-movies on my DutchFilmWorks DVD were not about explosions, hunted innocents or stylish vampires, but about criminal couples who want their adopted child back from the adoptive parents and about Hilary Swank with ALS. Instead of starting with a spectacular disaster, the film itself then opens with that rambling Hallmark TV movie music while one of the main characters gets involved in a discussion about God... and from that moment on the film goes downhill! The acting of Nicolas Cage (and also Chad Michael Murray) was not too bad for me because the really big gestures are shunned, but the predictable plot, the banal dialogues, the incredibly unexciting denouement of the plane crash and above all the disgusting evangelical approach according to which the sinners are left in their state of misery while the true believers are allowed to enjoy the Rapture, the "rapture into the church", make the film as a whole a nonsense that left a bad taste in my mouth. It's also nice how the vehicles of drivers who suddenly disappear, etc. still make countless victims, but yes, your own fault, then the innocent bystanders should have been a little more biblical. Bah. (Funny that the way the chosen ones disappear here is very similar to how half the population of the universe is doing in Avengers: infinity war.)

Mak.

This movie is nowhere near as spectacular as the poster suggests, which was a shame, because disaster movies are one of my favorite kind of movies. Perhaps the second place, because horror will remain my favorite genre for a while.

Left Behind feels a lot like a TV movie, probably this one was. But disaster movies certainly can't use TV-like approaches. They just have to stick to intense spectacle. That there is so much drama around the corner is therefore not a plus, but probably done so because of the book.

When I look up Left Behind a bit, I see that there was a lot of criticism of Cage. It's up to him that he makes some special choices these days. But here he comes out on top. The rest of the acting is rather contrived and at times even quite questionable.

The directing is actually the only real thing "Left Behind" was during the movie. How could Armstrong have thought that the result was successful with this. It's too soft for this kind of subject. The CGI is sometimes very ugly, the structure random and the way of filming often abominable.

Nowhere has an attempt been made to make it intense. Everything is portrayed too clearly and too classically. Dialogues are very weak and that creates awkward scenes that make no sense. The drama has failed miserably. There is hardly any tension at all. Action scenes are often very sudden and often disappear as if nothing had happened.

In addition, the film is also quite long unfortunately. 110 minutes was not a very easy task. While a flop listing may be a bit of an exaggeration, the film has mainly been mishandled by making it look like a TV movie. The film does have some nice scenes here and there , such as a bus that thunders off the bridge. Cage is also doing quite reasonably well, all for 1.5*.

The women in these films are helpless mothers or deranged daughters who only find peace again with the help of a man. Nicholas Cage is the pilot and adulterous husband who realizes at the end that nothing beats marriage, Cassi Thomson the agnostic who desperately tries to find her missing brother and only finds strength after turning to the Almighty. Extras criss-cross aimlessly in a shopping center parking lot as viewers run screaming out of the hall (or room) to avoid seeing this utterly ridiculous, offensive pseudo-Christian sermon. But even the most extremist believer cannot ignore the fact that there is no drama or tension building whatsoever. Even Cage can't survive this. Fortunately, Lea Thompson's contribution is limited to a cameo. Hopefully for her, the Evangelical Christians behind this monstrosity have put a lot of money into her collection bag.

What a terribly bad movie. Nicolas has been picking out terrible movies for years, but still. Sometimes you hope for something better. The story can be done quite nicely.

That's just not the case here at all. It's all about the action and the effects. And they are bad for me! Not normal.

Somehow, the film still looked pretty good. I think it has to do with the fact that I always find plane crashes interesting. So looked away from there.
