My (unexpected) favourite of the IFFR.

A beautiful, slow, and understated film. The slow pace creates a constant tension that almost gets under your skin. Furthermore, the film makes extensive use of beautiful settings, the contrast between the village and the mountains. The acting was very modest, but the protagonists felt realistic, or at least plausible, characters. After seeing so many films at the film festival that tried to pump as much pace into the film as possible with artificial, forced dialogue and rapid editing (which backfired), this film was a breath of fresh air. It shows once again that cinema is so much more than just telling a story as entertainingly as possible; it can also be a work of art.

When I read the title and the plot, I immediately thought this was a slasher film, but that was absolutely not the case. Whether that was a drawback, I later found it not to be. The thriller element was very well portrayed, and the tension was ramped up to the limit because you had no idea what was going to happen. This beautifully crafted thriller was anything but predictable, and I certainly found the few nude scenes very beautiful. Well, and that Carlos exuded a certain mystery. The only drawback, for me, was that this quite enjoyable film was a bit too long, and I found the ending a bit disappointing. The landscapes of the Sierra Nevada looked very beautiful, though.

3.5*

A carefully constructed, beautifully shot drama about a gentle tailor (Antonio De La Torre) harboring a sinister secret. The film flows pleasantly and manages to keep gruesome details to a minimum, making the few gruesome moments all the more effective. Unfortunately, the script loses some momentum towards the end, and the plot ultimately doesn't wrap up satisfactorily, but by then the film has proven itself.
