Director David O. Russell directed Christian Bale to an "Oscar" in the Biography / Sports film "The Fighter (2010)" and did it for Jennifer Lawrence a few years later with the Comedy / Drama film "Silver Linings Playbook (2012)" and now they can be seen together in this disappointing Crime / Drama film.

In this story, Christian Bale (with belly, beard and glasses) plays the role of con man Irving Rosenfeld, who deals in dubious loans and forged art. Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams with a navel-deep cleavage) is his mistress and his money-hungry sidekick. Their scam goes well until they're caught by FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper), who promises them a reduced sentence if they help catch bigger crooks. Baited by FBI agents dressed as rich sheikhs.

The music, the decoration and the hairstyles from the 70s are beautiful, but the story unfortunately lacks some momentum and turns out to be much too long at two hours and fifteen minutes. It's good that the well-known actors and actresses, namely Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence (all of them can also be seen on the movie poster), are so good, because thanks to them this film is still somewhat entertaining.

To be honest, given the impressive cast, I expected something better, but all in all, this Comedy/Drama film disappointed me and it certainly shouldn't have been necessary.

American Hustle is not exactly a film that brings a lot of news, it very much resembles the style of Scorsese's biggest mafia works. This film is less crowded and also less raw. Drugs are also missing. Those pop songs are very recognizable, just like the voice-overs. I always find that an easy solution, it just makes the film even more distant than it already is. The story is also never exciting, a lot of narrative that in itself was sufficiently entertaining. I liked the club scene the most, it was a welcome change in decor.

Bale doesn't immediately play his most successful role here, he is a bit guilty of overacting and because of his appearance he seemed a bit ridiculous to me. Amy Adams is playing a bit of a sex object here I think, always with her deeply cut cleavage. She plays very well here. Lawrence did a pretty good job, just a little too loud. Furthermore, Cooper and certainly also De Niro (who plays the umpteenth mafia boss in his career) color the film.

I thought it was a very good film, partly because of the great roles that are played by the cast and the fact that the story is based on truth, even the short performance of the Nero leaves an unforgettable impression, not a second too long for me, top film !
