Sylvia Scarlett's (Katharine Hepburn) mother dies. Her father Henry (Edmund Gwenn) tells her that he stole money from his boss's coffers to pay his gambling debts. He must now flee so that he does not end up in jail. Sylvia decides to flee with him. To avoid attracting attention, she disguises herself as a boy and lets herself be called Sylvester.
