A Filipino taxi driver dreams of a fairytale life as an astronaut. Inspired by American radio broadcasts, he founds a fan club for rocket architect Wernher von Braun in the mid-1970s. What remains of his dreams when he actually leaves the developing world for a journey to the West?

Perfumed Nightmare (Mababangong Bangungot) was quintessentially born on the editing table: the film's rhythm is determined by the associative way in which 16mm footage from the Philippines, Paris (the "way station" on the way to a hoped-for final destination in the US), and southern Germany (the birthplace of Von Braun) is edited together. The sum of images and voice-over resembles a travelogue in which director and protagonist Kidlat Tahimik attempts to apply his local, and partly autobiographical, perspective to the places he visits.
