It seems 20th Century Fox wanted to build on the success of Laura (1944) with Gene Tierney and Vincent Price. Unfortunately, this film doesn't quite reach that level. Price is excellent as the sinister "patron" for whom time has stood still, but Tierney is essentially little more than a docile observer of events. A waste of her talent.

In the nineteenth century, a system of patroonships still existed in the former New Netherland. The large landowner Nicholas van Ryn dates back to the feudal era. However, a new law allows farmers to buy their own land instead of leasing it. Anya Seton wrote the Gothic romance set in this period. Dutch words like mijnheer, patroon and kermesse are used repeatedly.

It takes place in a creepy castle near the Hudson River. Van Ryn bears similarities to Bluebeard. He even has a secret tower room, a symbol of his hidden, dark side and his isolation from the changing world. He sees a wife only as a means to bear him a son, a successor in his superior lineage. A crippled servant or a barren woman, in his eyes, do not deserve to live.

Vincent Price gives a superb performance as this horror who gradually loses his grip on reality. The graceful Gene Tierney plays his sympathetic second wife, who shows great courage but sometimes her eyes widen in fear. The most sinister scene is when she climbs the stairs to the secret tower room, with a shadow larger than herself. Walter Huston gives a fine performance as the puritanical, Bible-abiding father. Religion and supernatural phenomena are important. Thunderstorms, candlesticks, death knells, and Thomas Newman's menacing music contribute to the mysterious atmosphere.
