A team of filmmakers and technicians leave civilization to film the Northern Lights in Churchill, Manitoba in Canada's High North. They end up in a world without electricity, which is always covered by a layer of snow and ice. Here they have no choice but to wait patiently, at night in the harsh cold, until the natural phenomenon occurs. According to the natives, the Northern Lights are the spirits of the dead who greet the living. Mettler's material is complemented by images from space. The emergence of the northern lights is being filmed from Space Lab 3 on a Challenger satellite. dr. Don Lind explains what exactly these auroras are and what causes them.
