The Dyatlov Pass Incident plot

"History always repeats itself."

In February 1959, nine cross-country skiers go missing in a remote area of the Urals in Russia. Two weeks later, all nine bodies are found dead. Half clothed and hundreds of yards from their camp. The bodies contain high levels of radiation and they have serious internal injuries, including broken ribs and skulls. Yet they have no discernible external injuries. Their deaths have always remained a mystery. Five American students hope to solve the riddle by reconstructing the ill-fated expedition and recording their findings on film.

Of course, several of these types of Horror / Mystery films have already been made, such as the most famous "The Blair Witch Project (1999)", but nevertheless, these kinds of films always attract my attention and I usually find them entertaining and that also applies to this film, which is even based on a true event, namely the "Accident in the Dyatlov Pass", which I honestly had never heard of.

The story is quite nice and the same goes for the build-up of tension, which is pretty standard. Unfortunately, the denouement (the last 30 minutes) of the story is a bit disappointing and it actually only becomes more unclear (especially regarding the ending) than clear. It doesn't get really scary or exciting anywhere. It is nice that there are references to other events/films, such as "The Philadelphia Experiment (1984)" and "The Mothman Prophecies (2002)".

All in all a reasonable Horror / Mystery film that is nice to have seen and especially if you watch it very late at night (with regard to the atmosphere).

Mediocre found footage horror film, not bad, but certainly not a star within the now overcrowded subgenre. The film initially takes a lot of time and starts too slowly, so that you can be irritated extensively by the empty-headed protagonists. Once up to speed, events move too quickly, with exaggerated digital effects and computer game-like decors. The ending is intriguing though. In short, a mess that has its moments.

The Dyatlov Pass Incident

This one came on the radar recently, because this movie was pretty high on a list of only Found Footage movies. Reason enough to watch this one too, because I generally like Found Footage movies.

Unfortunately, the movie didn't live up to my expectations. The beginning is good. The story is well explained, you see interviews and an introduction of the cast who will join the expedition. Then they go with a small group towards that dangerous mountain in the middle of icy Russia. Soon, mysterious things begin to take place. footprints in the snow, radiation, a bunker in the middle of the snow. So far so good. Unfortunately, things went downhill once the group entered the bunkers. I've seen this in other movies, only 10x better. Now the budget will not have been that high and unfortunately you can see that in the CGI and also in the acting performances. Too bad, because there could have been more resident.

2.5 stars.
