"She's 32. She drinks too much. She hustles pool. She's got a 10-year old mulatto son. She's got a different boyfriend every night. She's in trouble. And he's in love."
The good-hearted sailor John (Caan) gets to know a hooker (Mason) during a leave of absence. He falls in love with her and accepts her ten-year-old son Doug. He loses his papers and stays in her house without receiving any pay. The hooker turns out to be pregnant from an affair before she met John. They are stuck on all sides, but decide to marry each other despite everything.
