Beautifully designed fairytale. A little darker than the Disney animation; I have yet to see the Disney live action. This film is closer to the original fairy tale, which explains the different tone, but also why the characters are not completely convincing in their actions and especially in their sudden feelings (at least, the way in which Belle falls in love).

The special effects are also not entirely convincing, although this is limited to the animated animals. For the rest, the film is a feast for the eyes, the gardens and the castle are beautifully designed, which also applies to Seydoux and her dresses.

The music is disappointing, because often much too emphatically present. It makes me doubt a bit between 3.5* and 4*. Finally the latter, if only because the pace was good, the film looks nice, and especially because of the fairytale atmosphere.

To me, La Belle & la Bête seemed like yet another film adaptation, perhaps for surfing the Disney recycling films. Still curious by big names such as Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassel. And director Christophe Gans has also delivered beautiful films such as Brotherhood of the Wolf and Silent Hill.

This 2014 version is a different movie - fortunately - than the two Disney versions. No songs but back to basics and a real fairy tale. Quite dreamy, which doesn't always do the characters well, but visually a huge gem. A constant tone and you look at a painting all the time. The film apparently did better in France (and hugely well in Japan) and was less popular in America. It is therefore not really meant to be a big blockbuster with sing-along songs, funny characters and the necessary jokes. But as a fairy tale and they have long forgotten that at Disney.

Great movie, but it lacks the chemistry between the main characters. The decoration and the fairy tale seemed more important than the acting. Nice to see, but you are missing something. Although it is still very nice what they have done with the film.

Mediocre.

Beauty and the Beast, but no longer for the little ones. At least, at times it seems as if Christophe Gans wants to take things a little darker. At other times it is still too childish to be considered an adult film. This way you get a meat-nor-fish story that starts to drag on after a while.

In any case, Gans also fails to give the most important substantive aspect any power, and that is the romance that is simply empty. There isn't the slightest bit of romance in it. Then it will be a difficult birth.

However, Gans scores a lot of points when it comes to the decoration of his film. It all looks very neat: many colors, many details, many nice designs. Fortunately, they have not been modest about this. The CGI regularly leaves a lot to be desired, but that should hardly come as a surprise. Musically, a string orchestra has been put to work, which results in an unsurprising but sometimes beautiful score.

2.5
