"Open Up And Let The Devil In"

A small group of deserters is on the run from a raging battle. They are captured by two men, O'Neil and Cutler. O'Neil is an alchemist and forces the group to help him find a hidden treasure buried in a field. They pass a large circle of mushrooms, which provides them with their first meal. The group then turns into a chaotic, fighting, paranoid mob. It soon becomes apparent that the treasure could be something other than gold and they fall victim to the terrifying energies that reside in the field.

Jesus, this was bad.

I saw it a while ago, but I've since forgotten what it was exactly about. I do remember a bad soundtrack, annoying characters and pale black and white photography. An experiment? Maybe, but not exactly successful if you ask me.

The biggest problem is that the film drags on scene after scene without anything actually happening. There is a brief suggestion of the occult, but this was far too little to make any impression.

No, this was really a disaster.

Kill List and Sightseers were really more than excellent films from Wheatley (especially Kill List), but here I don't think he really knows where he wants to go. It all starts well during the war, but as soon as the men go on the road it turns into an aimless story with few highlights. A great pity because the black and white style and the sober decoration fit in perfectly and there were really opportunities here. to make a nasty “horror” film.

A director like Ben Wheatley bounces in all kinds of directions during his career, but almost all additions form a special combination between genres that normally never go together. A Field in England has its positives, especially the soundtrack (Blanck Mass is an excellent choice) is very strong. The acting is also not bad and the last half hour is overflowing with idiosyncratic scenes, but otherwise it is a slowly unfolding story with uninteresting characters who just flop around. As a viewer, it completely escapes me how you as a director can conduct this with interest and focus, because the discussions that are held are really boring. So the first hour dragged on a bit and I waited until something worth mentioning happened again, but unfortunately that took quite a long time each time. It is once again a unique work for Wheatley, but I would prefer to see him come up with somewhat larger projects.
