De Nieuwe Wereld plot

Mirte is a cleaner at the application center for asylum seekers at Schiphol Airport. Anyone who enters the Netherlands as a refugee will stay for a maximum of ten days in this porch of the promised land, furnished with bunk beds - a place and period that seem to be outside normal life. This no man's land is a place that suits Mirte. She is a life-damaged woman, bit and defensive, who seeks guidance in the mop routine and even keeps her son at a distance. But when the West African Luc shows up, she has to lower her shield.

The film manages to hold the attention well and Bianca Krijgsman gives an excellent performance as the traumatized Mirte. Slowly but surely you are drawn into the story and you become more and more sympathetic to Mirte.

Intriguing premise: a traumatized cleaning lady realizes the inhumanity of a strict asylum policy. Unfortunately, the idea is presented in a somewhat cowardly manner. It will not really be a shock to anyone that Mirte will get closer to Luc and will thus be able to thaw from the outside world. Even the emotional farewell between the two was a long time coming Nevertheless, it is one of those films where the journey to that development is in itself interesting and beautiful enough to keep you interested for the entire running time. It has a pleasant black humor that makes the heavy load bearable.

What I find a bit disappointing about these types of films is the caricatured way in which IND employees are presented. According to the logic of this film, it is a corrupt mess there with employees who have not an ounce of compassion for their fellow human beings. Unfortunately, these types of caricatures do not do justice to the complexity of the subject. I think it is precisely the harshness of these types of systems that there are people working who really have the best interest of their fellow human beings at heart, but who have to deal with different political forces, which means that everything is always subject to change. And that indeed results in inhumane situations.

Not bad at all. The drama is not always well developed, but the raw atmosphere is well portrayed and the measured use of black humor suits Krijgsman perfectly.
