Feuten: Het Feestje plot

In Feuten: Het Feestje starts the new academic year for student corps HSC Mercurius with a gigantic registration party. Eternal student Olivier de Ruyter fights a conflict with the police, who have had enough of the nuisance Mercury causes in the area. Meanwhile, lawyer Bram Wagtmans is nostalgic for student life and decides that evening, for the last time, to go to hell with his friends at the club. Freshmen and best friends Elias and Lieve also come to the party. Lieve is the ideal fraternity girl, Elias is only at the party because he is in love with Lieve. These are the ingredients for an evening that will get completely out of hand.

Project X goes to the Dutch screens.

This provides a number of atmospheric portraits of the party and also makes for an entertaining whole. Only the Dutch system with study associations leaves me completely cold and the result is that the dividing line between irritation and entertainment is very thin. I'm not familiar with the series, so the characters don't bother me either. If they also start singing such a dispuut song, I'll give up completely. What horrible corps balls they all are.

That leaves me with mixed feelings after the film. The partying came across very well, the humor was sometimes quite okay and the pace was good, but for the rest everything could really be stolen from me.

2.5*

The Dutch Film Fund. I thought here comes another monstrosity. It turned out to be not too bad, it all came across fairly naturally and the young actors are comfortable in their roles. The music is fine tuned and luckily no Katy Perry, Kesha or other crap comes by. The drug use (cocaine and ecstasy) is also well highlighted (you see a few people actually biting their cheeks and having big eyes). I kept wondering: why are those cops (and even a 'swat' team) standing on the doorstep so distraught? As if they don't have a protocol for that and the police in the Netherlands never have to deal with such situations. Other than that, all well done and also strikingly closed with that return to the unexpected lover who is in the van. Nice print, in the autumn of 2013.

This movie is much better than the series. Especially because no attempt is made to tell a story, but is purely atmospheric.

A bit Project X-esque. And, of course, those balls are at their best when they get the blood out of your fingernails.

I continue to find that Broekman a terrible miscast. Doesn't have the coolness that is apparently expected of him in this role.
