The Immigrant plot
1920. Seeking a fresh start and the American dream, Ewa Cybulska and her sister Magda arrive in New York from their homeland of Poland. On Ellis Island, Immigration doctors discover that Magda is ill and the two sisters are separated. While her sister is quarantined, Ewa falls into the hands of Bruno, a charming but eccentric man who takes her in and gradually forces her into prostitution. One day, Ewa meets Bruno's cousin, the cheerful magician Orlando.

Brought this one once, but didn't think it was such an interesting film, especially in the beginning. Fortunately, the second part was a bit more interesting.
The cast did a good job and the time frame looked realistic.
Not really a must-see and don't need to see it again.

A melodramatic goof from director James Gray. The more than respectable cast is not doing much, with even Joaquin Phoenix on autopilot. Plot, characters and accents are way too thick and the syrupy music pushes everything a little further towards the abyss. Dharius Khondji's very fine camera work is a plus and I must say I wasn't bored, but this is really bordering on the admissible.
