I am not a fan of Ben Affleck, but after seeing this film I have to admit that he can act as well. This isn't a typical Affleck movie in which he plays, what starts out a bit like a rom-com eventually turns into a tragicomedy, and in this genre he does a lot better than in the type of comedy he usually appears in. It has become a warm film about a somewhat trite theme, Affleck plays a father whose wife dies and from now on has to take care of his daughter alone. A pleasant windfall that looks nice. 3.5*

“Try acting like a father, shit-head.”

Nice movie. Jersey Girl is not a romantic high-flyer or a humorous tour de force, but it is touching and endearing. As a widower with a daughter, Affleck is allowed to show a little more emotion than usual and that suits him well. Castro is touching as Affleck's daughter and acts strong for such a young actress.

I always think Liv Tyler is a plus in a movie and she does good things here too. Her character is poorly developed, but she still manages to make something out of it. And Damon, Lee and Smith's cameos are strong too. It doesn't get really dramatic anywhere and the film isn't funny either, but the feel-good level is high. Also worth something.

Smith does drama.

I still have to see his really pure comedy films. That will come from time to time, but for now it's just a little easier to grab his movies that just come on TV. Smith can do better than this, but it's nice that he tries new genres.

The first 5 minutes are clearly comedy, and they're pretty funny too. I used to have a good laugh with those children, but after that the laughter quickly faded and never came back. Especially if the film has at least 20-30 minutes of drama after those 5 minutes. That drama doesn't really want to touch, but it does set the tone a bit.

Directing is otherwise quite safe, while I am sure that Smith can go outside his box. He probably wasn't allowed to do that here. Camera work and editing are otherwise very classic. The direction remains safe at all times and sticks to a script that is sufficient but simply does not bring innovation.

Acting is also fine. I don't like those smart kids, but luckily Castro is pretty good. Affleck also plays well. He must have had fun during the filming, but his acting is not very special. Tyler and Carlin are also having a good time. It all works, but never really wants to stand out.

Furthermore, Smith does not really seem to be able to make a choice between children's film and adult film. The finale is clearly with a childish tone while other parts are again clearly aimed at adults. I can't really judge who exactly the target audience was unfortunately.

Jersey Girl has become a safe movie. Smooth drama with the necessary supporting comedy, but nothing really wants to touch. I also didn't find it funny at all after the first 5 minutes, more bland. Nice story, but nothing new. Because it was quite smooth, I give it a narrow pass, and also because the message was clear enough.
