The Stalls of Barchester plot
Doctor Black catalogs the library of Barchester Cathedral and discovers Archdeacon Haynes's personal diary among the rather poorly maintained books. He reads about how Haynes rose to the position of Archdeacon when his predecessor, the elder Pulteney, had a fatal fall in his home. The diary tells of his administrative responsibilities, but gradually Haynes' personal musings are also discussed.
