A film that captivates from start to finish, but ends up with a very disappointing ending. It could have been so good, but this was disappointing.

You are immediately taken into the story, from the first second. This allowed me to focus well from the start and I have never experienced boredom. As the film progresses, there is one strong plot twist that I didn't see coming. It was clear from the start that there was much more going on than the murder, but I thought the final story behind it was very strong. Followed by scenes where you hold your breath. In the end it turned out as I expected, but also what I hoped for. Then you get to the end, that there was a letter for Katie, no surprise, that letter was finally read out: great! That the eventual mother turned out to be Jo, a big downer! This actually ruined a lot for me, the whole thought behind this film was completely gone. I was not completely surprised by this outcome, I already (partly) thought about this at some point. I hadn't figured out its effect yet.

It is wonderful to watch Hough and Duhamel. They are well attuned to each other and radiate a lot of fun. The rest of the cast can't be faulted either, in general the performances are all well put together. The location was beautiful, also very calming to look at. A world of difference with the retrospectives, which in my opinion has been worked out very well.

Actually to the end this 4* deserved, but I think an ending is so important that I can't and don't want to give it. I've been hesitating between 3* and 3.5* for a long time, but in this case I think 0.5* deduction is sufficient. The rest of the film is just good to very good.

Typical female film that I thought I wouldn't like, but turned out to be wrong. The poster suggests a tacky film about a couple who can't keep their hands off each other. Hallström, however, takes the time to let the relationship between Kate and Alex blossom. As a result, the film is ultimately a bit on the (too) long side, but the advantage is that the credibility is not destroyed. I also liked the playing of Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel; they came across as natural and the chemistry between the two is definitely there. I also liked the plot twist at the end about Jo's identity and the subplot with the detective, although the movie could have done without it, didn't bother me. What also really helps the film is that, despite the drama part, it radiates a nice summery feel-good atmosphere and that I would like to visit Southport myself. In any case, I was pleasantly surprised and that is also reflected in my score.

3.5*
