Wang De Cheng Yan plot
The story of two warring generals, Liu Bang (Ye Liu) and Xiang Yu (Daniel Wu), who fight for supremacy over China at the end of the Qin dynasty. During the legendary party at Hong Gate in 206 BC, Xiang invites his rival Liu to dinner, with the intention of killing him.

Chinese warlord drama.
They are quite popular these days, so this film follows in the footsteps of The Assassins and similar films. Clearly not for the Western audience, who probably expect a lot more action in these kinds of films, but that action is just pushed into the background.
Instead, you get a rather personal and dramatic look into the lives of the warlords. The Last Supper is quite a nice addition to the genre, but Lu is just not strong enough. Visually very polished, but there are too few shots that really stand out. Furthermore, the visual pacing is too slow. An excess of epic slow motion sometimes makes it corny rather than dramatic.
I didn't find the story particularly captivating either. It's all been seen before, of course; the film also lacks a real acting powerhouse to carry it. Daniel Wu isn't that, and Chen Chang isn't given enough screen time. The narrative structure is decent (lots of non-chronological flashbacks) and the overall execution is solid, but the film just lacks that little something extra.
