"Sometimes there’s nothing left to do but laugh!"

The older and somewhat perverted George is married to the young, sexy Teresa. Their quiet life is cruelly disrupted by two wounded mobsters who raid their house and take them hostage. Teresa forces her husband to take some action, but the mobsters turn out to be rather strange, eccentric birds that are impossible to gauge.

Nice film by Polanski, full of quirky characters.

That is also the big plus of the film. Every character has his or her quirks and therefore at the same time also something sympathetic about him, no matter how wrong the person is sometimes. The acting is pretty decent and the remote island location is a good choice too. In combination with the occasionally beautifully shot black-and-white images, this ensures that the film is very atmospheric throughout the entire playing time.

The story itself sometimes looks a bit cohesive, but the nice thing is that it remains very unpredictable. It's not all that exciting, but the quarreling gangsters and other unusual characters regularly brought a smile to my face. Absurdity at its best this and those can also be very nice films, as it turns out here.

3.5*

When Polanski was still one of my favorite directors I thought this was a great film, but now that I see it again after all these years I am less enthusiastic. In particular, this reminds me (too) strongly of the "absurdist" playwrights of the 1960s such as Beckett, Pinter and Ionesco, with the mysterious and never-seen boss (Godot, anyone?), the isolated situation which lends itself perfectly to power games and changing relationships, the miscommunication, the plot that really only consists of the mutual understanding, and the open ending. All very entertaining, well played and with a good sense of black and sometimes macabre humor, but also dated in a way that doesn't make me particularly happy.

Disappointing film in which a criminal on the run seeks shelter with a newly married couple. A simple setup that in itself could have made for a great film. But I found the characters quite annoying and not just because of the acting. The humor was not for me here either. As far as I'm concerned, by far the least film I've seen by Roman Polanski.
