This is an excellent film to approach with an open mind.

If you go into it with the conviction that Diana was some kind of angel, a fairytale princess who was above every human value, then yes, you will be disappointed. But if that is what you expect, is there a film imaginable that is sufficient.

Fortunately, I have very little to do with royal families and celebrities, so it's easy to say. But when you see the film, it becomes clear that the price of fame weighs very heavily. The harrowing loneliness bursts from the screen, impossible to find happiness in any way. And that's about the woman who would later be called the most beloved person on earth. Difficult to balance that, and no wonder that the film is so mercilessly criticized, especially by British critics.

Now I have to say that the role of Naomi Watts is not very convincing. Still a very good actress, with a lot of top performances to her name. This one fits in a bit badly, the Diana mannerisms seem rehearsed, the Diana hairdo looks like a piece of plastic pressed together with a lot of force and chemistry, and the voice and way of speaking do not seem real either. Of course we also have to consider that it is almost impossible to do that really well; still I think the result is really on the low side of insufficient. Then the other roles come out better in comparison, but, they do not have to deal with the same impossible task.

All in all it remains a somewhat strange case. Not really a film, not really a documentary, not badly played but still insufficient. Nice to have seen, but you don't really miss anything. Actually only worth it for the insight into the way of life of someone like Diana, the complete lack of palace romance and the enormous loneliness.

Pitiful, especially.

It is incredible that Hirschbiegel, the director of 'Das Experiment' (2001) and 'Der Untergang' (2004), is behind such a flat trifle. It starts with the casting of the title character. Naomi Watts is a hypersexual Hollywood starlet, a cool vamp, a seductress; you can't get a hold of her and that is why she is so incredibly fascinating. In itself, the sensual, seductive nature of the actress could have been an exciting choice to contrast Diana's image as an accessible crowd pleaser. However, Watts remains a kind of princess and the pea, an infantile and naive girl who fell victim to the big bad world, while she also did some good things for humanity. Her co-star, Naveen Andrews as Dr Hasnat Kahn, remains the kind of actor who does better in pulp productions or television series, because he lacks the nuance and credibility to carry a major role. Watts/Andrews have zero chemistry together, resulting in their bloodless romance dragging along at a snail's pace.

Around the time of her sensational interview with BBC Panorama's Martin Bashir [Prasanna Puwanarajah] about her failed marriage to Prince Charles, Diana meets heart surgeon Hasnat Khan [Naveen Andrews] and begins an affair. The relationship is complicated by the constant presence of paparazzi. Watts is excellent and the screenplay provides some insight into Diana's love/hate relationship with the press and Diana's unique ability to empathize with the patients she meets in hospital, but it's neither profound nor surprising.
