Finally being able to tap the head; I've been looking for this one for quite some time. Surprisingly strong film about the conflicts between youth and the established order in a new-build neighborhood in a small American town, where boredom causes young people to seek refuge in criminal practices. Especially the first hour is impressive (with a pleasant Dazed And Confused-like atmosphere); when things get out of hand, things get a bit too exaggerated and far-fetched. Still worth watching, with a still very young Matt Dillon in his memorable film debut.

Based on the American 'Over the Edge' by Jonathan Kaplan, Phil van Tongeren talks about the 1970s films with loiterers and resistance against the established order. This strong, but relatively unknown film marked the debut of 14-year-old Matt Dillon and was the inspiration for Nirvana's 'Smells like Teen Spirit'.

I think you can watch it safely John Milton, at least he has my stamp of approval. I thought it was a very strong film, in which the youth in a suburban town where there is nothing to do is completely bored. There is nothing to do, the parents have little time, and about a quarter of the population is young. So the youth therefore indulges in loitering, vandalism, drugs, booze and parties, and that only escalates in the course of the film. Apparently also based on a newly built suburb in California, although the final denouement is exaggerated.

I thought it was a pretty raw, natural film where I could imagine the group dynamics very well. Strong acting too, with a whole bunch of convincing child actors who were really about 14 or 16 years old, including a very young Matt Dillon in his debut role. I was really positively surprised by this film, which may come across as a bit nihilistic, but it really convinced me as an image of how life in boring, suburban America can go off the rails. Good soundtrack too.
