The Color Wheel plot
"An objectionable comedy about disappointment and forgiveness."
JR ends her relationship with her teacher Neil Chadwick. She gets her younger and rebellious brother Colin to help her pick up her belongings from Chadwick's house. Along the way, they argue with each other and with almost everyone they meet in their way.

Hilarious originality.
Great bleak worldview, two sarcastic negative siblings to the core who argue but despise each other the least. Great writing by Altman and her chemistry with Byington is truly electrifying. That awkward line delivery from both of them is also spot on. I have rarely seen it so effective. Timing is really flawless and the material (or is this improvised?) that they receive is also a bombshell.
Especially that mumbling and bickering causes a lot of laughs. At one point my stomach really hurt from laughing, very hilarious. Also far too many moments to quote actually, but you won't see any decency here, even though it is extremely inappropriate. JR and Colin are uncompromising. Kate Lyn Sheil also stops by. That can never hurt.
Shot in black and white (a great title for that alone) and grainy as hell. As ugly as the night, but it does create desolation, just like their worldview. I saw beauty in that ugliness. I think the ending is the icing on the cake that fits these two characters so well, how they approach life and how dependent they are on each other because of their worldview. Really liked their 'consumption'. Film that can still grow, but I feel that The Color Wheel is just a bit too little.

Very idiosyncratic indie film.
I actually felt good about it straight away. The dialogues seem very natural. I don't know exactly how much was worked from the script, but it all came across as improvised. It works very well. And that seems to happen throughout the film. The dialogues also flow very smoothly, are full of sarcasm and are very funny. The way it's shot works fantastically. Nice and raw, grainy, in black and white and no fuss to make it look nice. Just the way it is. Acting is fine. Altman in particular is doing well and is a very good opponent for Perry. The situations they find themselves in are both very awkward and semi-recognizable. And that also applies to the conversations that both have. And that ending... WTF?!
The Color Wheel is a very nice, funny film, although it lacks that little bit extra to make an even bigger impact.

Colin [Alex Ross Perry] leaves his girlfriend Zoe [Ry Russo-Young] to help his sister JR [Carlen Altman] pick up her things from Neil [Bob Byington], the professor from her school with whom she spent some time lived together. They bicker and make cynical jokes about all kinds of things in this presumed homage to Woody Allen's romantic comedies. Between the racist, homophobic and incest-related jokes, a good joke pops up every now and then. But the cynical tone and lousy timing (especially from the monotone Rosse Perry) ruin any attempt at humor.
