Fantasia/2000 plot

Fluttering triangles do battle to the familiar notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. A school of whales takes to the skies during Ottorino Respighi's 'Pini di Roma' and moments later life in 1930s New York is shown to the sounds of Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue'. Then a tin soldier with only one leg has a blood-curdling adventure to Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2 and an eccentric flamingo performs stunts with a yo-yo during the finale of Saint-Saëns' 'Le Carnival des Animaux'. Mickey Mouse sees his art spiral out of control while Dukas' 'l'Apprenti-sorcier' sounds and Disney colleague Donald Duck lends old Noah a hand on the somewhat pompous tones of Elgar's 'Pomp and Circumstance'. Finally, nature miraculously rises from the ashes when the orchestra enters the last bars of Igor Stravinksky's 'Firebird Suite'.

Fantasia/2000

Excellent Disney film in which the images and the music come together perfectly. The score with, among others, Beethoven and various orchestras is fantastic, and the various short stories are also excellently put together. Especially the part with the whales, and the part in New York, are beautifully done. And The Sorcerer's Apprentice returns, which is always a joy to watch. The last part is a colorful and bombastic closing that will leave your eyes and ears short.

The old Fantasia wasn't really my cup of tea, and neither is Fantasia 2000. It's not very annoying either, though: it's something like 80 minutes of classical music with animations, which sometimes tell a story and sometimes not. The music is fine, but that's not the main reason for me to watch a movie. The animations are quite variable in level. The whale segment stood out to me mainly because the whales themselves looked really cheap, and the New York segment couldn't really interest me too much because of the complete lack of story. Ditto for those dull flamingos, although that was over after a few minutes. I didn't want the cameos of famous heads either. But it wasn't meant to be as negative as it sounds now, it wasn't really that disturbing. And luckily, the second half has some nicer animations, with the toy soldier, short cameos from Mickey (with the original Sorcerer's Apprentice) and Donald Duck, and the somewhat bombastic but nice bouncer. All in all, that brings it to a satisfactory level for me.

I'm not a Disney fan and never will be, but this collection of animated shorts is pretty okay. I don't know the original so I don't have anything to compare it to, but most segments are fun and especially beautiful enough to make this a painless viewing experience. It's a shame that the films have to be introduced by a variety of familiar faces if necessary, something that adds nothing and takes you out of the experience. Apart from that pleasant enough.
