Kita no Hotaru plot

Fireflies in the North is set in chilly and savage Hokkaido, during the early years of the Meiji era. Takeshi Tsukigata (Nakadai) is a brutal guard at Kabato Prison, where convicts are sent to build roads that open up the savage area. Stories about the appearance of a ghost have been circulating among the prisoners for some time, and Tsukigata, too, is beginning to worry. Until suddenly a geisha who had fled from Kyoto shows up...
