William Powell suffers from amnesia and ends up in a criminal web that closes around him. The first half hour takes place in the courtroom where all the characters who will play their part in the rest of the film are also discussed. Hedy Lamarr is wonderful as herself, and as Powell's wife, the typical Hollywood wife of the upper class. Clair Trevor and Basil Rathbone do well as a couple of blackmailers.

Crossroads is a film in which a lot of palavering takes place, and the viewer is misled. The punchline of the film is correct on paper, but still seems unbelievable to me, typically a plot that is too contrived. However, a solidly (unobtrusively) directed film by Jack Conway, with some beautifully photographed scenes in the dark towards the end.

A bit odd that this Hollywood film is set in Paris with characters speaking American, feels unnatural. It is also a remake of the French film Carrefour (1938).
The last 5 minutes the story is reeled off very quickly because the film roll was apparently almost finished. Whereby the confrontation at the police station looks a lot like a farce, the kind of ending we see more often in films from that time.

Routine but still entertaining enough job.

Excellent crime mystery story in which a diplomat is blackmailed with his alleged past, because he suffers from amnesia he has no knowledge of facts from before a certain point in his younger years.

This fact is of course used to shape the plot, but it is not discussed in detail further.

Powell and Lemarr do a great job as a couple, Basil Rathbone plays the bad guy this time instead of his familiar good guy roles we were used to from him in the Sherlock Holmes films.

The film alternates nicely between serious scenes and a somewhat light-hearted, even comical tone, especially when the character Dr. Tessier is allowed to play his scenes.

At the end the plot is finished a bit hastily, but otherwise an entertaining and at times exciting film
