Citadel plot

"They see your fear!"

Tommy Cowley is a young father who suffers from street anxiety after his wife is brutally attacked by a gang of children. Trapped in the run-down suburbs of Edenstown, he himself is also terrorized by the same gang, who now target his daughter. With the help of an understanding nurse and a priest, Tommy learns the truth about these children. To overcome his fear, he will have to confront his past and enter the place he fears most: the abandoned tower block known as the Citadel.

There's probably a grand idea behind it, that Gutmensch isn't there for nothing, but how that translates into the film isn't always my cup of tea. The opening is brutal and cuts to the bone. The harsh circumstances are stark, cold, and pale, to say the least. Then Foy and Barnard attempt to depict trauma, but how it manifests, rather overblown, is significantly less satisfying. It effectively erodes the foundation of what's to come. The hoodie horror itself isn't all that bad, but without a connection to Tommy's misfortune, the effect isn't what it should be. Or could have been.

Filmed in bleak locations in Glasgow and Dublin, this psychological thriller initially establishes a foreboding atmosphere. However, the story of a father trying to protect his baby from the same hooded, zombie-like children (think David Cronenberg's "The Brood," only about 10 years older) who previously murdered his heavily pregnant wife isn't well-developed, causing the film to slowly decline in the second half, leading to an unsatisfying finale.

A mixed thriller with a few mean moments, particularly in the first 10 minutes. Director Ciarán Foy then slows down a bit to unravel the story and develop the characters, before returning to the horror elements. Unfortunately, aside from a well-crafted atmosphere and a few tense moments, there's little in Citadel to be happy about. The tension never really builds, the characters are never truly relatable, and the finale takes far too long. The slow pace is therefore an odd choice for a film that thrives on its faster moments. Foy clearly belongs in this genre, but he hasn't yet created any truly great masterpieces.
