Le Fils de l'Autre plot

Just as Joseph is about to start his military service with the Israeli army, he discovers that he is not his parents' biological son and that he was confused at birth with Yacine, the child of a Palestinian family from the West Bank. This revelation profoundly changes the lives of both families and forces them to look at their own identities, values and beliefs from a completely new light.

Baby switching and its consequences are certainly dramatic. When that happens to two hostile population groups, it is all the more painful and actually so extreme that it almost seems like fodder for a comedy.

Lorraine Lévy, however, makes a witty, sensitive picture of it, without pomposity and which actually contains a positive message throughout the issues.

Good atmosphere and very good acting from all the actors.

Due to a tragic coincidence, two children were switched shortly after birth and grew up with people who were not their biological parents. Interesting detail: one of them is Palestinian, the other Jewish-Israeli. Lévy shows what that discovery means for the now 18-year-old Joseph [Jules Sitruk] and Yacine [Mehdi Debi] and their families. Good location work is a plus, as are the sincere performances of the cast, but the underlying message about mutual tolerance and understanding is somewhat simplistic, making the families' reactions a bit too rosy to be credible.

A film that spontaneously reminds me of the better and more layered Soshite Chichi ni Naru (Film, 2013) by Koreeda. There two Japanese families have different economic realities, here the very great political-religious contrast between Jews and Palestinians in Israel. Unfortunately very topical today with the war. But the film actually barely focuses on religion. The Jewish-raised boy may have doubts as to whether he still belongs to the Jewish community, which only touches on the subject briefly.

The emphasis is placed more on mutual interaction, with the two sons themselves, but also with his parents and an older brother. Apart from acting petulantly out of powerlessness, the tensions are actually not too bad. Not that it is a feel-good film, but it is all handled properly. As if there is only one option.

Let that be my biggest criticism for the film. A bit too simple. Apart from that, entertaining and excellent acting. Also interesting is the context of the secured West Bank with its checkpoints and fortified walls. Narrow 3.5*.
