Leven? of Theater? plot
live? or Theater? Ein Singespiel – that's what Charlotte Salomon (Berlin, 1917 – Auschwitz, 1943) called her painted life story consisting of more than seven hundred sheets, which she gave into safekeeping just before her deportation with the words 'Keep this well, it's my whole life! ' During the preparation of the feature film Charlotte (1980), the makers of the film received a previously unpublished letter from Charlotte's stepmother, Paula Salomon-Lindberg, requesting that the content not be used in the film. In this letter, addressed to her great love, Charlotte describes the circumstances in which Leben? or Theater? came about, she makes a touching confession and we get close to the 'real' Charlotte for the first time. In his latest documentary, with the same title as Charlotte Salomon's life's work, Frans Weisz not only provides a fascinating picture of the young artist's life, but confronts prominent figures with her letter; a posthumous revelation that sheds a whole new light on the last period of her life.
