Definitely good.

The downside of this film I think are the few scenes that throw a spanner in the works by slight aimlessness. I'm talking about 2 or 3 scenes with the brother with the long hair, which do add something in terms of content, but absolutely not in terms of entertainment or maintenance. A bit boring, to put it that way.

And that's a shame, because apart from that, the film is anything but boring. The soundtrack is absolutely entertaining and quite creepy every now and then. The acting is satisfactory. Most shots are, despite the (apparently) low budget, serene and beautiful. The atmosphere is ominous and very supportive of the story. All this also ensures that scenes with, for example, the foam beast become really creepy. During some long shots in these horror modes, I felt the atmosphere in the room become grimmer, and the breath of the audience (including me) was held.

The main character's perspective is so neatly conveyed that I sometimes felt the urge to join him. In general, I did not agree with his way of thinking, but I still caught myself thinking that he was right several times. Also during his last monologue, goosebumps suddenly appeared all over my body, because I suddenly understood 100% what he meant, and had actually discovered the clue of 'le mystère'. This, coupled with the sublime final shot, made me realize what a mega powerful film I had just seen.

Still a shame about those few boring scenes. If these were different, more fitting with the rest of the consistent solidity, I might have aimed for the 4.5 maybe even 5 stars.

Difficult. On the one hand, the film is clearly made with craftsmanship, on the other hand, the film grabs me less than other films by Toyoda. It was not as hypnotic, and that is precisely what attracts me to his work.

Nevertheless, beautiful camera work, the music that sounded was very atmospheric, although I was surprised: no more punk guitars? I don't think it would have been so appropriate here. The story is quite intriguing, the reflections of the main character in combination with the environment and the music make the whole very poetic. I wouldn't be surprised if a revision yields more than the 3.5* that I am now giving.

Enjoy.

Toyoda is back and better than ever for me. At first it seemed like it would be an ode to Wakamatsu, but Toyoda clearly has a different goal in mind. The revolution may be central to the story, but it is ultimately Ryoichi's motivations that determine the central theme.

Monsters Club looks beautiful, the soundtrack is perfectly matched to the images and in terms of acting there is little to complain about, except that I would have preferred to see Yôsuke Kubozuka in the lead role.

Toyoda's best in my opinion. Less accessible than his older work, but more atmospheric, more powerful and more personal. More of this.

4.5* and an extensive review
