In my round of giallos, I've arrived at this 1973 vehicle. It has some good elements: beautiful ladies showing their best side, a beautiful setting with a dilapidated castle/mansion (filmed in Italy, though it's set in England), and a great soundtrack by Daniele Patucchi. It's also interesting that Camille Keaton—who would later become immortal with her leading role in the ultimate revenge film I Spit On Your Grave—has a bit part.

But that's about it. The story is too clunky, even though they want to give the impression of an Agatha Christie mystery. It never quite lives up to its promise. The acting is of the "wooden" variety—something we often see in giallos—but here it bothered me a bit because the story itself doesn't amount to much. Despite a promising opening with Thomas Hilton's deathbed, the potentially suspenseful scenes are poorly constructed, resulting in a lack of tension. The director simply didn't know how to do it. This also hinders the optimal use of the otherwise excellent soundtrack, which pops up at every opportunity, ruining the music's power. Last but not least, the film's pace is dragged down by semi-erotic scenes. I don't mind the occasional naked scene, but here it was a bit too much, clearly intended to trigger something in the viewer. Something about expectations that aren't met.
