Children of the Corn: Genesis plot

Tim and Allie seek shelter at a remote building in the desert after being stranded and lost. A strange priest lets them in, on the condition that they leave the next morning and that they don't snoop around. When screams and howls are heard outside, Allie sneaks out to investigate. She makes the horrifying discovery that she and Tim are dealing with a bizarre cult. The cult offers up an entity that may reside in the body of a little boy.

Even though the film is called: Children of the Corn, I felt that little of the original story remained, which was really about the "corn". There were some moments in the film that were decent, but overall the story was just bad. I also found the ending very unsatisfactory.

Part 9 of a series full of very mediocre horror films. The title Genesis indicates that we are going back to a beginning, although it is unclear whether the film builds on the original series of seven films or the 2009 reboot - or whether the film itself is another reboot. Anyway, continuity is a mess with this series anyway, so I'll be worried about it too. Children of the Corn: Genesis tries a few new things. We've seen the premise of a couple with car problems in the middle of nowhere before, including in the original, but this Children of the Corn contains very few children or corn. It is a smaller story in which the makers use all kinds of tricks; the film is a collection of supernatural events, dream sequences and long monologues and dialogues.

Some innovation is fine, but it is a shame that it is all presented in such a ridiculously uninteresting manner. The characters are uninteresting and nothing about the story is memorable. The only thing that made me smile was that police officer who flies into space out of nowhere. Silly and very minimal, but with films like this you really have to look for those few moments that entertain you. Genesis may not be the worst chapter in the series, but that bar is very low. Still, it's not a film that gets you excited. Nevertheless, the series continues, with a new film being added this year. It probably never ends.

1.5 stars.

In the meantime, we have reached a point within the COTC series where there is hardly any connection with the original film. Genesis is simply its own film, which is linked to the source material with a few short references. Director Joel Soisson mainly benefits from a solid cast, in which Kelen Coleman and Billy Drago stand out. It makes the escalation between the members a bit more solid to follow, especially since the paranormal angles provide some unpredictability to support that. Unfortunately, the design of the horror is rather poor, the tension never gets off the ground and things start to veer towards the idiotic towards the finale. Many horror films require a certain ability to turn off your brain, but Soisson asks a lot from the viewer. Some actions really don't make sense anymore. It is also a pity that the unpredictability is somewhat ruined by the inhuman amount of clichés. It all adds up to a whole that isn't the worst in the series, but isn't progress at all.
