'13 Flowers of Nanjing' is set in 1937 in Nanjing in China during the Sino-Japanese War. A couple of brave fugitives are taken care of in a church. The group, brought together through the horrific chaos of war, risks their lives for the church's schoolchildren during the violent invasion of the city. Because of the enormous setbacks, heroism presents itself among the least likely individuals as they bravely navigate the treacherous environment to save themselves and their loved ones.

What a very stylish and dramatic film. Above I read something about 'cheap sets' and I wonder what the person has been watching because I think it's beautiful. Beautiful low shots against the sun, a convincing decor regarding the broken Nanking, the beautiful images inside the church with the color palette of the colored glass. Visually it is to suck a point, just like the war. Nothing to complain about. In terms of story, a nice interaction with different characters/groups and different settings. The kids are angry and scared, the whores are conceited and spoiled, Bale plays with conviction the scumbag who only thinks of himself. The interaction of the whores who eventually sacrifice themselves and Bale who experiences a kind of 'coming of age' fits well and shapes the story well. Furthermore, the necessary drama and horrors how the two runaway ladies meet their end does not lie and further a nice build up to the endthe ladies who sacrifice themselves and whose fate remains uncertain what I think strikes a good balance was their rape and death, as suspected , shown the film had just been over the top again, too bad to just say it.
Also beautiful, the somewhat dreamy moments with ditto Asian music. Almost a bit surreal.

Better than expected this one from Yimou Zhang who has really outdone himself with "Raise the red lantern", but here presents nothing more than a decent film in an interesting setting. Very raw portrayal of the battle at Nanjing where countless innocent civilians were killed by the Japanese invasion. It's still incredible to see how humans can turn into brutal beasts.
All very nicely filmed, with slo-mos and an overview of the action, partly due to excellent camera handling and editing. Very nice atmospheric images, such as the scenes on the stained glass window. Well acted by almost the entire cast. Nice!
Film also reminded me of the young Bale in Spielberg's Empire of the sun. Then this one was a lot better.

Revised! Continue to think this is a fantastically beautiful film in which especially the women girls get the leading role for me. Bale is doing well, but I'm always not much for drunks. Fortunately, the picture does change later in the film. In addition to being dramatic and harsh, absolute beauty has also been chosen in this terrible war. The beautiful colors and camera work are of a very high level. The film is loosely based on the real story, but that does not detract from this film. A very colorful film in a colorless war!
