In a small Mississippi town, black landowner Lucas is arrested for murder. The white people in town like to see him hang. The white uncle of a young friend of Lucas's is willing to defend the case. He is hindered in his work by a lynch mob set up by the brother of the murdered man and the fact that Lucas will not identify the real culprit.
